Whitney Plantation is a museum devoted to slavery in the U.S. South that is preserved in Whitney Plantation Historic District near Wallace, Louisiana, in St. John the Baptist Parish. Originally built by the Haydel family, a prosperous clan of German immigrants who ran the property from 1752 to 1867, Haydel bought his first slaves at the New Orleans slave market and the family had one of the largest slave forces in Louisiana the grounds had been uninhabited for a quarter century
